Earning pocket money

Earning pocket money

A rare view of a child actually earning pocket money by doing a chore. The yard needed washing down, a large quantity of water, some suds and a half hour task progressed without any problem. Perhaps this could have been thought of as play fun, should the task really have been paid for?

New Toy - Fuji Finepix S6500FD

New Toy - Fuji Finepix S6500FD

My new toy arrived today. Just in time to use it to take photos on Christmas day.
I've been selling my old junk and stuff on Ebay for 2 months now to raise the money to pay for a camera upgrade.
I wanted a larger camera which is better suited to my fat clumsy Irish hands, and I wanted more features similar to those found on a DSLR without actually going to the expense of a DSLR.
Other reason't I didn't want to go down the DSLR route include the risk of dust getting on the sensor and ruining shots (the camera mags are choc-full of scare stories about this), and I didn't want to lose the ability to do video and live preview in the LCD.

I opted for the Fuji Finepix S6500FD, which is the big brother of the camera I bought this time last year, and used to take this picture.
The S6500FD has manual zoom and focus. two features I've been absolutely desperate to have on my digital camera ever since I inherited a film SLR earlier in the year and discovered their benefits.
It also boasts a wider ISO range and better noise reuction.
It has a maximum exposure time of 30 seconds. That's double the exposure time I'm used to with my S5600, which only goes up to 15 seconds.
It also has facial detection technology, which is awesome. I tested it this morning by pointing the camera at Janet, and nomatter where she went, a wee green box locked onto her face and followed her, keeping the shot focused and metered on her face at all times. That'll be great for use at parties and gatherings.
Plus all of my existing lenses and filters will fit this new camera perfectly.

I've had this camera for about an hour now, and I can honestly say it's a brilliant bit of kit. Absolutely fantastic. A really worthy upgrade from the S5600.
All the menus and controls are laid out in a similar way to the S5600, so I was up and running in seconds as everything felt familiar to me.
I'm keeping my S5600, as it's always good to have a backup camera. Besides, the S5600 is just too good a camera to get rid of. I've grown very attached to it and I don't think I could bear to part with it.

I can't wait to get out and about now with my tripod and take some pics.

Dinky Toys 152b ?- 1937 on..

Dinky Toys 152b ?- 1937 on..

Officially named Reconnaisance car this pretty accurate military Dinky Toy was first issued in 1937. Produced till somewhere in 1941, when the factory had to stop all civilian work for the duration and concentrate on casting work for the Ministry of Supply.
Re-issued postwar and sold till the early fifties, mostly for Export and as such renumbered # 671. Post war issue - like this one- is recognisable by the rimmed wheels, pre-war smooth wheels were used. There is also a colour difference in pre and post war issue which now more likely has faded.Export to the US was issued in Khaki.
Many of these early Dinky Toys suffer from bad metal fatique, one can easily break off pieces with bare hands. This particular model has very delicate window and side screen pillars, which break off when handled roughly by children.
Based on the Morris-Commercial model CD a 30 CWT (1 1/2 tonne) 6x4 vehicle produced from 1933 till the outbreak of war in 1939. Most were sent overseas and many were left behind in France. These light truck based cars were a British speciality and similar models made by Commer were used by the RAF
The real thing was outdated when war was declared and it is amazing the model was sold at all postwar. Word has it, postwar issue was produced with 1939/1941 vintage castings, left unfinished when warwork commenced. In the early austerity years of peace this made perfect sense.
