Tree at the Point

Tree at the Point

In Pittsburgh a Christmas tree is lit up for the holiday. Located in Point State Park where the three rives meet for all to see.
The origin of the Christmas Tree dates back to ancient times. Germany, England, Roman, Egyptian, many cultures and stories.Interesting write-up in "the origin of the christmas tree". Whatever your belief and what you get from it is fine.
I personally try to have mine up by Dec 1st. Retailors seem to eartier and earlier each year. I think historians of the future will look back at our present culture and joke about how we fell right into the merchant's commercial exploitation of society. Do we really need to create a one to two year dept to our families to prove our love for them? Strange if you really think about it huh? Right up there with all the pagan rituals like adorning statues, virgin sacrafices and burning witches at the stake will be Black Friday.
The Christmas Tree to me represents the birth of the light of the world and of simpler times when family meant more and giving meant more than how much you recieve.
I remember as a child my father working in the mill and the few things my sister and brother and I recieved under that three, always what we wanted and mostly what we needed. Not the amount my boys recieved as kids and surely not the amount that they'll give thiers. Don't know how we got the message that more means more love. Strange! The memories of Christmas Eve's Feast of the Seven Fish at Gramma's house with my family and Aunts and Uncles and all my cousins and the Christmas day dinner with all the same people are more remembered by me than that cool little Rock em Sock em Robot toy that I completely forgot about till I wrote this LOL.
The Christmas tree to me means love. Everyone seems a little nicer in December (except if you're driving too slow in front of someone on the way to the mall LOL).
Too bad that spirit of Christmas can't carry over throughout the year. Might not be so bad.

For whatever reason we use the tree, I dig them. A lit tree moves me.

227/365 - Hello Zaima!

227/365 - Hello Zaima!

Day 227 - Sunday, 15th August 2010

I tried to photograph my youngest niece, who is going to be two next month. She received a Hello Kitty cuddly toy as her early birthday pressie and have been playing with it. As soon as I tried to pose her, she was all over he show! I could not get her to stay still for one shot, she was more interested to see back of the camera and press the buttons!

After a lot of tries, I ended up with this shot with a very busy background. Tried a bit of dodging and burning to rescue it but overall I'm not too pleased with this. Hopefully I'll catch her in a different mood some other time.

I also had to send my 24-105mm lens for repair and back to using the kit lens. Hopefully I'll get it back at the end of the week.

Sega Gamera 3 (Game Prize)

Sega Gamera 3 (Game Prize)

Company: Sega
Made In: China
Material: PVC Vinyl
Height: 19.7 cm
Length: 40.6 cm
Released: Spring 2002
Retail Price: NFS Game Prize
Limitation: Uncommon
Packaging: Header Card w/Bag

Additional Info: Though i have only credited Sega as the company for this release. Small company credit also needs to go to X-Plus. Sega contracted the sculpting to X-Plus for this game prize. X-Plus had Takeuti Yoshinobu sculpt this mold. Takeuti Yoshinobu is better known under his sculptors name as Shinzen Takechi or simply by his company name Shinzen. He sculpted this in late 2001. But the figure itself was not released until spring of 2002. Shinzen is highly known as a master sculptor of kaiju and dinosaurus and has released many beautiful kaiju resin garage kits.

This is the 1999 Gamera suit version. This toy was released only as a game prize that you had to try to win inside a crane game in japanese arcades. The item comes unassembled in a bag with protective clear removable plastic on the parts to protect it from scuffing against each other.

A burning fist version also exist of this mold. The only difference is the burning fist versions right arm is clear vinyl with yellow and orange sprays.

A very common problem with this toy is keeping the arms, legs, and tail to stay attached to the body. They will keep popping out. Glue is required in order to keep it assemble.

LEGO Greenhouse

LEGO Greenhouse

LEGO UK commissioned the award-winning designer, Sebastian Bergne, to create a public installation using the iconic bricks, as part of the London Design Festival 2011. Entitled the "LEGO Greenhouse", this large-scale installation will be on display in the North East Piazza, Covent Garden, the West End's premier retail, cultural and entertainment district, from 15th to 25th September 2011.

The LEGO Greenhouse is the first fully functioning greenhouse built entirely from LEGO bricks. The walls, the floors, even the earth is LEGO bricks. The plants and vegetables growing inside are however, entirely real.

Drawing inspiration from Covent Garden's history as London's original fruit and vegetable market, the pitched roof glasshouse installation will take up residence outside the iconic Market Building in the high-profile North Piazza directly facing James Street, the main gateway into the Piazza.

Since its first interlocking brick was launched in 1949, LEGO products have become more popular than any other toy in history. LEGO bricks, by their very nature, are all about design and creativity, stimulating imaginations and inspiring the builders of tomorrow. The interlocking principle with its tubes makes it unique and offers unlimited building possibilities. With about 3,900 different elements in the LEGO range, plus 58 different LEGO colours, all LEGO elements are fully compatible and six eight-studded LEGO bricks can be combined in 915 million different ways.

Covent Garden has collaborated with the London Design Festival for four years and is a key destination within the Festival's calendar. In addition, the neighbourhood has a rich history in delivering free, world-class cultural content on the Piazza and surrounding areas having previously collaborated with Tate Modern and Somerset House and on exhibitions from the likes of Sam Taylor Wood and Banksy.

Industrial designer, Sebastian Bergne, has run his own design studio in London for 20 years. Having generally designed consumer products including lighting and furniture, Bergne's LEGO creation uses the iconic bricks to demonstrate the possibilities of LEGO bricks in a public space. Inspiration has been drawn from Covent Garden's design heritage and cultural history as well as the design community in London itself, reflecting the overall Festival programme.

In daylight, the structure looks very much like an ordinary suburban greenhouse dropped into a new environment. Yet at night, it assumes another character entirely. It is transformed into a magical box, glowing and lit it seems, by the life of the plants it contains.

Though a temporary installation, the LEGO Greenhouse's functionality hints at the possible potential of LEGO bricks to bridge the gap between toy and useable construction for the real world.

Sebastian Bergne comments, "It's been a pleasure to be involved with this project for LEGO UK and Covent Garden. What instinctively appealed to me, was that I would finally have the chance to live out a childhood dream and build something huge and usable out of LEGO bricks.

"As with the majority of my work, I enjoy taking a material or process and pushing the boundary of what can be done with it. This time we have created an interesting juxtaposition of a natural environment growing in an almost digital, mass-produced LEGO structure, and it makes you look at LEGO bricks in a new way.

"In my work, I love to make something special from the ordinary, and I hope that's what has happened here. It's an everyday function, made of a material we know, in an ordinary environment, but together they make something extraordinary and I think it is going to be quite magical."

Bergne has worked closely with the LEGO Build and Technical Teams and Covent Garden to realise the project, with the final design built and installed by Duncan Titmarsh, the UK's only LEGO Certified Professional.

Plants and vegetables will be supplied by Indoor Garden Design (www.indoorgardendesign.com); lighting will be provided by LED Tape (www.led-tape.com).

The LEGO Greenhouse will be exhibiting in the North East Piazza, Covent Garden, WC2 from 15th to 25th September 2011, as part of the London Design Festival 2011. Free admission.

Judhe Jensen, "The Dragon Laydee"

Judhe Jensen, "The Dragon Laydee"

A dear friend for 35+ years, Judhe (pronounced: Jude) Jensen, is an incredible and creative genius. Since 1978, Judhe has been an award winning artist at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival, where she runs her artist’s booth called, “Wizard’s Toys Pottery.” For decades, she has sculpted and fired some of the most creative, original, and fascinating pottery dragons that you will ever see, anywhere in the world! She is equally talented as a graphics artist.
In 1979, I first started helping Judhe with running her booth at the KC RenFest. By 1982, the Festival had allowed me to become an official partner in her booth, and I began displaying/selling stained glass windows there, at least through 1989. After that, in 1990, my Early Music quintet called, “The Castle & Cross Consort,” of which I am one of the original members, began performing regularly at the KC RenFest (through 2004), and I stopped displaying any stained glass at the Festival.
For this Festival, Judhe created (and portrayed) a fantastic character named, “The Dragon Laydee.” This is a photo from 1983 with Judhe in full “Dragon Laydee” regalia. Especially in those early days of the Festival, Judhe was (and undoubtedly still is) very good friends with two other wonderful artists who were also working there. They were Gloria Warnock, who is also a “potter” from Reeds Spring, MO, whose booth was called “Sweetwood Pottery", and Kathy Barnard, a very well known stained glass artist in Kansas City, Missouri. On quiet afternoons at the Festival, the three of them would roam the grounds together and were informally known as “The Three Brazen Harlots!”
+++++Please look at the photos in my set “Renaissance Festival stained glass, etc.” to see more about Judhe, our booth, the stained glass windows I made for display there, and the wonderful characters and friends we met through the KC RenFest!
***This photo is a recently shot duplicate of my original print, which had been taken in years past with a non-digital camera.***
